Essential oils for Alzheimer’s disease
The first stages of Alzheimer’s disease come in the form of memory loss and attention deficit. All cognitive functions will progressively be affected and the disease’s evolution is accompanied by behavior disorders. This problematic is often found in independent senior living communities, where a great number of residents suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and its associated troubles.
Alzheimer – “Soft” therapies for complex symptoms
Among the behavior disorders that are frequently associated with cognitive symptoms and mnemonic troubles, there is also apathy, depression, anxiety, irritability and agitation. Moreover, 44% of people suffering from the disease also deal with sleep disorders (insomnia and waking up repetitively) which according to a recent study would be the very first symptoms of the disease.
Today, the medical staff is looking to help patients by searching for therapeutical alternatives— as opposed to the more traditional drugs—that would calm the symptoms and improve the people’s quality of life. Essential oils are increasing in this context. Many clinical tests show that the diffusion of lavender essential oil reduces anxiety as well as aggressive behavior and improves not only social interaction, but also daily tasks that require the use of one’s memory. In a recent study, the effect of essential oil diffusion on elderly people has been studied on 28 residents from which 17 were suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. The essential oil or air diffusion protocols being: rosemary and lemon for 2 hours from 9am to 11am, followed by lavender and orange diffused in the evening from 7:30pm to 9pm. The patients have been evaluated 4 times during the protocol—before and after the diffusions of oils and air—with the use of neuropsychiatric behavior tests (cognitive tests GBSS, FAST and TDAS). All patients have noticed a significant improvement in their cognitive functions after the aromatherapeutic treatment.
The synergies accompanying Alzheimer’s disease
In order to optimize and amplify the benefits of essential oils for the needs of the social and medical field, Aroma Therapeutics has created simple synergies of 4 to 7 essential oils that are commonly used in certain independent senior living communities. More particularly, our “Sleep” recipe is used for the improvement of sleep quality of some residents. The diffusion of the “Memory” recipe is suggested in shared living spaces during the activities.
All of these data prove that aromatherapy is one of the drug-free solutions that is the more promising for people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease as well as the people accompanying them.
